Over 80% of adult Americans suffer from gum disease at one time or another. It is a major cause of tooth loss in the United States today.

There is not a cure for periodontal (gum) disease. It is caused by destructive bacteria. By performing a daily home care regimen to control the bacteria and by working with our office, together we should be able to bring this infection under control without the need for surgical intervention.

Assessment

At your first visit, we will complete a thorough assessment of your mouth with pocket depth readings, bone loss measurements and a microscopic evaluation of plaque and bacteria living in the spaces between the teeth. We will also discuss a proper home care regimen specialized to your individual needs.

Deep Cleaning

A deep cleaning of the pockets surrounding the teeth is where we will remove all debris along root surfaces. We call this scaling and root planing. Often local anesthetic is used for comfort to allow for a proper cleaning. This deep cleaning reduces inflammation and allows for healing to occur.

Evaluate Healing

After the deep cleaning, we will re-evaluate the healing within 4-6 weeks by taking pocket depth readings and a microscopic evaluation of plaque levels. At this appointment a recall interval is established, usually a 3-month cleaning schedule. This professional cleaning helps to control bacteria from causing damage to gums. During these regular 3-month cleanings, we will continue to evaluate if the disease has stabilized. If not, further treatment will be recommended.

Home Care

Home care is a very important part of the success of the deep cleaning. It is imperative to use these specific products daily to help keep gum pockets clean and healthy.

This office recommends:

• Philips SONICARE Electric Rechargeable Toothbrush (Diamond Clean or FlexCare Platinum)
• Viajet Home Irrigator with TheraSol Solution (under the gum irrigant)
• Daily Flossing
